United States Withdrawing 8,000 Troops from Iraq by February
Drawdown attributed to lessening levels of violence

Washington — Improving security across Iraq, coupled with a sustained reduction in the levels of violence, is making it possible for the United States to reduce its forces by nearly 8,000 personnel by February 2009.

Washington -- Coalition forces have returned security responsibilities for Iraq’s Anbar province to Iraqi authorities, says President Bush, who added that the region’s dramatic turnaround is a testament to the Iraqi people’s commitment to confront extremism and build democracy.

U.S.-Iraq Agreement on Military Forces Nearing Completion
Rice says any agreement must respect Iraqi sovereignty

Washington -- The United States and Iraq are very close to completing a final strategic agreement that will permit U.S. military forces to remain in Iraq and continue to conduct operations after a United Nations mandate ends December 31.
