Concerned about the Environment?Global poverty? Then you need to be concerned about timber and wildlife trafficking.Vienna, April 10, 2008Timber and wildlife trafficking is a global problem not confined to one region or economic sector. Organized crime has discovered the profitability of this trade, which can rival that of trafficking in drugs and weapons. Some conservative estimates put the value of wildlife trafficking at about $10 billion a year globally, and developing countries lose $10-15 billion in revenues every year because of illegal logging. Tragically, the effects of illegal trafficking in timber and wildlife on the broader social fabric are often lost - it lowers the economic value of legally traded goods, contributes to poverty, and encourages lawlessness.
