U.S. Ambassador Addresses Salzburg Global Seminar Panel Discussion on Contemporary European History

RZB
Vienna, October 13, 2009

Salzburg Global Seminar, an intellectual meeting ground for future leaders based at Baroque castle Schloss Leopoldskron in Salzburg, hosted a panel discussion on “20 Years  After: What Next for Europe “Whole and Free’?” on October 13, which was held at the Raiffeisen Zentralbank Vienna headquarters.  On the guest list for this gathering were Vienna-based program fellows and friends of the Salzburg Global Seminar.  The panelists, three of whom identified themselves as Salzburg Seminar fellows, included former U.S. Ambassador to Germany John Kornblum, former Austrian Chancellor Franz Vranitzky, the Governor of the Austrian National Bank, Ewald Nowotny, and former Czech dissident and current NYU/Prague faculty member Jan Urban.  After introductory remarks by Raiffeisen CEO Walter Rothensteiner and greetings from U.S. Ambassador to Austria William C. Eacho, III, the panelists shared their personal perceptions of the fall of the Iron Curtain.  In the ensuing discussion moderated by Salzburg Seminar Senior Vice President Edward Mortimer, the discussants attempted to identify the essence of a “European model” and a suitable future project for Europe in the years ahead.
