"The Long Steady March: Racial Minorities in American Politics" Salzburg, Linz, and Vienna
Austrian academics, teachers, students and members of the general public gave uniformly high marks to the presentations of Professor Paula McClain, Professor of Political Science, Public Policy, Law, and African and African-American Studies at Duke University. During her eight days in Austria, she conducted workshops in Salzburg and Vienna for teachers of English. Entitled "Diversity and Equality in 21st Century America," the workshops were co-hosted by the Austrian Pedagogical Colleges of Vienna and Salzburg. Prof. McClain shared her insights into the development of the Civil Rights Movement and the current state of race relations in the U.S. with the participants and discussed ways in which they could integrate this information into their classes. In addition to these workshops, PAS organized four lecture programs for her, three in Vienna and one in Linz (the latter was co-hosted by the Linz Chapter of the Austro-American Society). Her topic was "The Long and Steady March: Racial Minorities in American Politics." All four presentations -- especially the one for nearly 100 journalism students at Vienna's University of Applied Sciences -- were followed by lively discussions. Both the quality daily newspaper "Der Standard" and the national English-language radio station FM4 carried interviews with Prof. McClain. |
