The Future of U.S. Foreign Policy after the Presidential Elections

Vienna
June 18, 2008

On Tuesday, June 18, Chargé Scott Kilner addressed a group of LL.M. students in International Legal Studies plus four eminent Austrian academics in International Law and Security Studies, on “Continuity and Change of US Foreign Policy in View of the Upcoming US Elections.” In his remarks, the Chargé outlined and juxtaposed the two presidential candidates’ positions on issues such as terrorism, nuclear power, the environment, but also vis-à-vis countries such as China, Iraq and Iran, Russia and Cuba. The bottom line of his remarks was that, while the tone might change, the general thrust of future U.S. foreign policy under either candidate is not expected to differ too much from the current administration’s positions. The ensuing Q&A was lively and testified to the audience’s keen interest in the subject matter and appreciation for the Chargé’s visit.
