Opening "Library of 100 Languages"
Oberösterreichische Landesbibliothek
Linz, October 2, 2009
Information Resource Officer Catherine Marsicek, U.S. Embassy Vienna, and Eva Muhm, Director of the American Reference Center, attended the official opening Oct.2 of the “Library of 100 Languages” project, which is part of Upper Austrian provincial capital Linz’s role as capital of European culture in 2009. The library is a special collection of books and texts highlighting the languages spoken by the many immigrants to Linz. Totaling almost 25 percent of Linz’s population, immigrant donors were invited to fill the “Library of 100 Languages” with texts and books from their respective home countries. In addition to donations from Linz residents, Embassies gave books as well: The U.S. Embassy Vienna, through its Public Affairs Section, contributed books on multiethnic literature, culture and customs of the United States. This “linguistic treasury” is meant to preserve the people’s cultural heritage, reflects current reading habits and provides insights into migrants’ ways of life.
