Muslims in the Austrian and American Military in the Past and Present

Vienna
May 29, 2008

Remarks by Cultural Attaché Katherine Perez, U.S. Embassy Vienna

High-level military experts, students of the Islamic School in Vienna, and many others paid close attention to Dr. Valeria Heuberger’s findings on Muslims in the Austrian and American militaries in the past and present. On May 29, Dr. Heuberger, a historian and well known expert on Balkan issues, gave a broad overview of Muslims in the Austrian Military during World Wars I (Austro-Hungarian Empire) and II, as well as the situation now in some EU member countries like the Netherlands, Germany and Great Britain. She also shared what she learned from U.S. experts during her participation January 2007 in an International Visitor Leadership Program “Ethnic, Cultural and Religious Diversity.” Additionally, she has attended conferences in the States and also had the chance to visit a military base in Norfolk in April. She showed the audience pictures of the prayer rooms for Muslims on the base and relayed interesting details of her talk with a Muslim Chaplin. The questions from the audience clearly illustrated the keen interest in this subject and the subject of Muslim integration at large.

Remarks by Cultural Attaché Katherine Perez
