"Americans in Vienna"Vienna, June 28, 2007Titled as “Americans in Vienna,” the Eugene Hartzell Office, co-sponsored by the U.S. Embassy Vienna, hosted a concert that paid tribute to three American composers who have settled in Vienna: Eugene Hartzell, Martha Southwick and Nancy Van de Vate. Acting Public Affairs Officer and Cultural Attaché Katherine Perez in her welcome remarks pointed out the manifold cultural links between Austria and the U.S. and appreciated the organizer’s commitment of bringing American contemporary music closer to the Viennese audience.
Remarks by Acting Public Affairs Officer Katherine Perez Dear John, sehr geehrte Damen und Herren, Ladies and Gentlemen! It's a great pleasure to be here tonight at this very special program that pays tribute to three great American composers who all fell in love with Vienna many years ago. I'm sure most of you are well aware of the many famous Austrian-born artists who emigrated to the United States, especially to Hollywood. And I'm not necessarily talking about our Californian Governor. I'm more thinking of composers such as Erich Wolfgang Korngold or Max Steiner who celebrated their biggest successes during their time in the U.S. As Cultural Attaché in Austria, however I am happy to see that this is not a one-way street and there are also American artists who have settled in this country and achieved great success in Austria and throughout Europe. They are the best cultural Ambassadors we have. I don't want to talk too long. Let me just thank John Nicholson on behalf of the U.S. Embassy for his passion and engagement in bringing these excellent American composers and musicians closer to the Viennese audience. Thank you, and please enjoy the concert! e-mail: embassy@usembassy.at |
