Citizen DialogueVienna and Vorarlberg
Imam Kavakci, Noorain Khan, Felicitas Galedary and Ali Eteraz visited Austria on a three-day Citizen Dialogue program between April 28 and 30. Chargé Scott Kilner hosted a well-attended roundtable discussion with representatives of the Muslim community, especially young Muslims. The Austrian and American participants engaged in a lively discussion on the differences in Muslim lives in Austria and the U.S. In Vienna the Citizen Dialogue delegation also met with immigration and inter-faith NGOs, Austrian policy makers, Turkish interest groups, and academia. The program in the province of Vorarlberg started with a meeting with the political, community, and religious leaders of the Muslim community. The meeting that lasted for over 4 hours provided for interesting insight into the situation of the predominantly Turkish Muslim community in Vorarlberg. The Citizen Dialogue delegation visited the Jewish museum in Vorarlberg and met with representatives of the Jewish community and the Catholic Church, as well as with Muslim religious leaders at a mosque. The program in Vorarlberg ended with the visit of a youth center, which provided a good opportunity for the CD delegation to talk to young Muslim high school students. The center is run by an immigrant NGO and frequented by Turkish and Bosnian immigrant youth. |
