Opening remarks by Counselor for Public Affairs William H. Wanlund
Good evening, Ladies and Gentlemen, and welcome to tonight's program. I am Bill Wanlund, the Public Affairs Counselor of the U.S. Embassy.
Please allow me first to thank our co-sponsors who helped making this evening's lecture possible - Dr. Fröschl who generously offered the Renner Institut as the venue; and Prof. Gärtner of the Austrian Institute for International Affairs who thankfully agreed to moderate the discussion, following the lecture.
I'm pleased and honored that Prof. Blacker is able to be here tonight to talk about 'U.S. - European Relations After the Iraq War,' a topic that is very much in the public eye these days. Prof. Blacker just finished teaching a master class at the Diplomatic Academy and we are grateful for his availability.
Prof. Chip Blacker is a most distinguished political scientist. He is the Director and Senior Fellow of the Freeman Spogli Institute and the Olivier Nomellini Family University Fellow in Undergraduate Education. Prof. Blacker also serves as co-chair of Stanford University's International Initiative.
During the first Clinton administration, Professor Blacker served as Special Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs and as Senior Director for Russian, Ukrainian and Eurasian Affairs at the National Security Council.
I'm much looking forward to this distinguished expert's view of the current state of the transatlantic relations and its significance for the future.
Much has been said about the relations between the U.S. and the EU. Some are optimistic that relations are warming up, others detect a rift that won't heal but all agree that they are important. As EU Commission President Barroso put it,'....they are the most important relations in the world.'
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome again and thank you.
