Each year in February, the U.S. honors the struggles and triumphs of
millions of people of African descent over the most devastating obstacles -
slavery, prejudice, and poverty.
Black History Month moreover pays tribute to the contributions of
African-Americans to the society. From Louis Armstrong to Ralph Ellison to
Martin Luther King, Jr. to Thurgood Marshall, to name just a few,
African-Americans have excelled in countless ways and undertakings, shaping
and improving American society and the wider world as well.
For this year's Black History Month celebration, the US Embassy, together
with vienna theatre project and the support of many artists and sponsors,
organized a festival that not only commemorates the American black
experience, but also through charity raises awareness of the humanitarian
catastrophe in Darfur, Sudan, and assists people living there.
The festival program included a concert at Vienna's Birdland, screenings of
two award winning films, "To Kill a Mockingbird" and "Beloved" at the
Austrian Film Museum, and the Austrian premiere of Jeff Stetson's play "The
Meeting" at Ensemble Theater.
