DS-156 Nonimmigrant Visa Application - electronic version
If you are calling from inside Austria and would like to speak to a live Visa Information Services Representative regarding general questions about visas or how to apply for a visa at the Consular Section in Vienna, please call the visa information line telephone number listed above. Our Visa Information and Appointment Scheduling Service Representatives are available to take your calls Monday - Friday, from 7:00 am - 8:00 pm, local Austrian time. The call center staff are not consular employees and cannot make commitments about visa issuance.
Calling the Visa Information Service, a contractor of the Embassy, from outside of Austria allows visa applicants to obtain visa information and schedule visa application appointments by using a MasterCard or Visa Card. The service can be accessed by calling +49/9131/772-2227. Each call costs a flat fee of 15.00 Euro, paid by credit card, in addition to long distance charges to Germany.
This service will be especially useful to those callers who previously could not access the visa information/appointment service via the per minute service. It now allows callers from outside of Austria to access the Visa Information Service directly. The service is available to the public from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday - Friday except holidays.
In order to serve you better, starting in September, as an additional free service the Visa Information Service will provide each caller who schedules a visa application interview appointment with an email, confirming the day and time of the visa appointment, as well as providing additional helpful information concerning the required documentation and the visa application process itself.
We recommend that you plan your visa application well in advance of your anticipated travel. Please inform yourself ahead of time of possible visa requirements. The application process for student visas, for example, may require several weeks if certain documents have to be obtained from a school in the United States.
All individuals (except those listed below) applying for Non-Immigrant Visas at the U.S. Embassy in Vienna are required to apply in person at the Consular Section located at Parkring 12a, 1010 Vienna.
These are the only exceptions:
1) Children under 14 years of age;
2) Persons 80 years of age or older;
3) Applicants for diplomatic visas (A-1, A-2, G-1, G-2, G-3, G-4 or NATO visas);
Applicants required to apply in person need to contact our visa information line in order to schedule an appointment: 0900-510300 (call costs Euro 2,16/minute, available only for callers in Austria). This is - without any exceptions - the only way to schedule an appointment. For Austrian citizens or third country nationals with permanent residence in Austria who are currently outside of Austria, the appointment may be scheduled by any other person in Austria.
Applicants applying for an E-1 or E-2 visa (Treaty Trader or Treaty Investor) may submit their visa applications without an appointment during our VIP hours. For details please see Treaty Traders and Treaty Investors.
Applicants exempt from the personal appearance requirement may either apply in person (with appointment only) or apply for visas by mail.
Please note that all applicants have to submit a stamped (postage 1 Euro), self-addressed return envelope large enough for the return of your passport and documents. It will take approximately one week to receive your passport by mail. The passport cannot be collected in person from the Consulate.
Emergencies: Please do not delay your visa processing by contacting the Consular Section for an emergency appointment. A limited number of appointments will be set aside daily for applicants who need to travel immediately due to an unforeseen emergency. Please contact the visa information/appointment number directly for an emergency appointment.
Students and Exchange Visitors (F-1 and J-1 visa applicants) who have already received the I-20/DS-2019 and who must report to the U.S. Institution before normal visa processing can be completed, please inform the Call Center upon scheduling your appointment that you are requesting expedited processing.
