In America, all citizens have an opportunity to forge their own paths forward, and their success is limited only by the size of their dreams.  Memorial Day, Rede von Präsident George W. Bush, Arlington National Cemetery, 26. Mai 2008Heute kommen wir zusammen, um jene zu ehren, die alles gegeben haben, um unsere Art zu leben zu sichern. Die Frauen und Männer, die wir hier ehren, dienten der Freiheit. Sie brachten Opfer für die Freiheit. Und in zahllosen mutigen Taten starben sie für die Freiheit. Aus fernen Ländern wurden sie an Friedhöfe wie diesen zurückgebracht, wo gebrochene Herzen ihre gebrochenen Körper empfingen. Am 22. Mai 2008 gab Präsident George W. Bush seine Absicht bekannt, David F. Girard-diCarlo aus Pennsylvania zum neuen außerordentlichen und bevollmächtigten Botschafter der Vereinigten Staaten in Österreich zu ernennen. And on this Day of Solidarity with the Cuban People, we focus our attention on the men and women working to secure freedom, democracy, and human rights for the citizens of Cuba.  Venture Capital Meets Hi-Tech, Electronic Journal, U.S. Department of State, Mai 2008This eJournal explores the phenomenon that drives uncounted Americans — and now citizens of other nations — to create fledgling “start-up” businesses that explore and exploit the latest developments in high technology. It also investigates the closely related “venture capital” phenomenon. How investors match their funds to (hopefully) winning ideas is a big part of the start-up story. Across our Nation, law enforcement officers carry the great responsibility of protecting their fellow citizens. On Peace Officers' Memorial Day and during Police Week, we honor these brave public servants who fight crime, violence, and terrorism, and we pay homage to the heroes who have fallen in the line of duty. In recent weeks, many have expressed concern about the significant increase in global food prices. And I share this concern. In some of the world's poorest nations, rising prices can mean the difference between getting a daily meal and going without food.

The Department requires strong leadership at a time when our housing market is experiencing a period of challenge and uncertainty. I send greetings to those observing Passover. More than 3,000 years ago, God liberated the Children of Israel from the bondage of Egypt and led them on a journey towards the Promised Land. During the holy days of Passover, Jews around the world celebrate this deliverance from oppression and give thanks to a loving God for His many blessings. Holy Father, Laura and I are privileged to have you here at the White House. We welcome you with the ancient words commended by Saint Augustine: "Pax Tecum." Peace be with you.
