U.S.A.-NATO
Unsere Nationen haben die NATO geschaffen, um den freien Völkern in Europa und Nordamerika Sicherheit zu gewährleisten und eine großartige Allianz der Freiheit zur Verteidigung von Werten aufzubauen, die zu einem hohen Preis errungen wurden. Das ist uns teilweise gelungen.
Die NATO Allianz diente zur Abschreckung der Sowjetunion. Sie bot freien Völkern Zeit und Raum, den Kommunismus zu besiegen. Und sie führte den Kalten Krieg zu einem unblutigen Ende. Jetzt stehen wir vor der großen Möglichkeit, ein ungeteiltes, freies und friedliches Europa zu bauen, mit dieser großartigen Allianz der Freiheit als seinem Herzstück.
Die Arbeit hat begonnen. Durch die Aufnahme neuer Mitglieder weiten wir Sicherheit und Stabilität in ganz Mitteleuropa aus. Durch die Errichtung der Partnership for Peace (Partnerschaft für den Frieden) bezogen wir Mittel- und Osteuropa und Eurasien mit ein. Unser Handeln im Balkan gebot der ethnischen Säuberung im Herzen Europas und dabei auch einem Diktator Einhalt.
Doch es gibt noch mehr zu tun. Wir müssen unsere Allianz stärken, unsere Streitkräfte modernisieren und uns auf neue Bedrohungen vorbereiten. Wir müssen die Kooperation mit unseren Partnern erweitern, einschließlich Russland und der Ukraine. Und wir müssen unsere Hände ausstrecken und unsere Herzen öffnen für neue Mitglieder, um Sicherheit für ganz Europa zu schaffen.
