MENSCHENHANDEL
Im unserer Welt des 21. Jahrhunderts, in dem sich Frieden und Demokratie auf allen Kontinenten ausbreiten, ist es erschreckend und moralisch unakzeptabel, dass hunderttausende Männer, Frauen und Kinder von Menschen, die aus ihrem Elend Kapital schlagen, ausgebeutet, missbraucht und versklavt werden.
Menschenhandel betrifft zahlreiche Länder rund um den Globus, einschließlich mein Land. Geschätzte 800.000 bis 900.000 Menschen werden jährlich "gehandelt". Fast 20.000 dieser Opfer gelangen in die Vereinigten Staaten. Der grenzüberschreitende Charakter dieses Verbrechens macht es erforderlich, dass Ursprungs-, Transit- und Zielländer zusammenarbeiten müssen, um Menschenhandel zu verhindern, seine Opfer zu schützen und die Verantwortlichen strafrechtlich zu verfolgen.
Die Vereinigten Staaten sind bereit, jenen Ländern zu helfen, die entschlossenen Einsatz zeigen, ihre eigenen Kapazitäten zur Bekämpfung des Menschenhandels zu stärken. Gemeinsam können wir den Opfern von Menschenhandel helfen, sich aus ihrer Versklavung zu befreien und es ihnen ermöglichen, in Würde und Freiheit zu leben. Wenn wir zusammenarbeiten, können wir vielen Tausenden den Schmerz ersparen, den andere erlitten haben.
