BIOTECHNOLOGIE

Unter Biotechnologie versteht man den Einsatz moderner wissenschaftlicher Technologien, einschließlich der Gentechnik, zur Verbesserung oder Modifikation von Pflanzen, Tieren und Mikroorganismen.

In der Landwirtschaft ist das Verbessern von Erntegut nichts Neues. Seit Jahrhunderten haben Bauern, Pflanzenzüchter, u.a. verschiedene Pflanzen gekreuzt (Mischungen der Gene), mit dem Ziel, mehr und hochwertigere Nahrungsmittel zu erzeugen. Unter Anwendung fortgeschrittener wissenschaftlicher Methoden stellt die Biotechnologie eine beträchtliche Erweiterung unserer Möglichkeiten dar, neue Eigenschaften bei Feldfrüchten einzuführen.

Im Rahmen traditioneller Züchtungsmethoden werden wiederholt Tausende von Genen über mehrere Jahre und viele Pflanzengenerationen hinweg gemischt, um ein erwünschtes Merkmal zu erhalten. Dank der Wissenschaft kann dieser langwierige Prozess mit Hilfe der Biotechnologie beschleunigt werden, da sie es Wissenschaftlern ermöglicht, ausgewählte Gene direkt in eine Pflanze einzubringen. Dies führt auf viel effizientere Weise zum gewünschten Resultat. Obwohl es mit Hilfe traditioneller Züchtungsmethoden zwar gelungen ist, einige der natürlichen Barrieren beim Kreuzen verschiedener Pflanzenspezies und manchmal sogar -gattungen zu überwinden, erweitert die Biotechnologie diese Möglichkeit beträchtlich.
